Use the results, but check them
SpellingTestMaker is built to be accurate and is tested against known reference values. It is still software written by people, running in a browser we do not control, on input we cannot see. Treat every result as a well-informed starting point rather than an authority.
Before you rely on a result for anything that matters — money owed to someone, a legal or tax position, a medical decision, a machined part, a navigational fix — check it against a second source.
Specific limits of this site
The graded spelling lists on this site are a compilation, not a standard. No national curriculum in the United States or the United Kingdom publishes a list of words per grade — spelling appears in those documents as patterns to be taught. The lists here are organised by pattern and are a reasonable starting point, but the words your school has actually set take precedence over them every time.
The Dolch and Fry lists are reproduced as they were published, in their original groupings and without modernisation. Where a word or a grade placement reads as dated, that reflects the original list rather than a recommendation.
Marking is an exact character comparison after whitespace and curly apostrophes are normalised. Case is ignored unless you switch that on. The tool cannot recognise a legitimate regional variant as correct, so a child writing "favourite" against a list containing "favorite" will be marked wrong — enter the spellings you intend to accept.
The lists use American spellings throughout. British, Irish, Australian and other variants are equally correct in their own places, and any of them can be typed into the box instead. Nothing here should be taken as a claim that one national standard is more correct than another.
Words are read aloud by the speech synthesis built into your own device, not by a recording made here. Pronunciation, accent and voice quality are entirely determined by your operating system and its installed voices. Homographs such as "read" and "live" will sometimes be read in the wrong sense, which is why an example sentence is available for every word and is switched on by default.
Lists you save are held in your own browser's local storage. That is not a backup: clearing your browsing data, using a private window, or switching device or browser will lose them. Anything you need to keep should be copied somewhere of your own, and a share link you have lost cannot be recovered because nothing was ever stored here.
Not professional advice
Nothing on this site is educational, diagnostic or other professional advice, and using the spelling test maker does not create a professional relationship of any kind. If a decision has real consequences, ask somebody qualified and accountable.
